Yore there was a big ancient oak tree in old Germany which was venerated by all Germans and which was consecrated to Thor, the Thunder God, and it was considered the "World Axis" which linked the Earth to the Sky (So the oak is an inverse symbolic version of thunder). In 723, this tree was destroyed by Boniface the missionary in his attempt to christianize the germans.
